Pagbayad Sa P7-M Protest Fee Ng mga Taga-Suporta Ni Robredo, Binasura Ng Supreme Court
- The Supreme Court junks Vice President Leni Robredo's camp to help pay the remaining electoral protest fee.
- On July 4th, the 'Piso Para sa Laban ni Leni' group asked the Supreme Court to help pay the protest fee filed against her.
- They are planning to file a motion for reconsideration.
The Supreme Court rejected the petition of the supporters of Vice President Leni Robredo to allow them to pay the remaining balance for the election protest filed against her by the defeated vice presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.
The group expressed their disappointment towards the Higher Court in a statement on Thursday, August 10. They are planning to file a motion for reconsideration, reports said.
“We cannot just accept the decision of the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) and ignore the passion with which the public joined this crusade. For this reason, we are availing of the remedies granted by law and will be filing a motion for reconsideration within the period allowed,” said Bernabe.
“We shall set forth arguments not previously raised and build on points already stated in the petition,” he added.
As of Thursday, the group has managed to raise P6.5 million worth to suffice vice president’s remaining fee. If the motion for reconsideration in granted by the PET, the group will deposit the money directly to the High Court’s account.
However, if their plan gets junked again, the money will be donated to Robredo’s anti-poverty program Angat-Buhay. Still, Robredo’s camp is preparing to raise the money on their own, said the vice president’s legal adviser Barry Gutierrez.
“We understand that the group plans to ask for reconsideration of the ruling, and we do hope that they are successful. But we are already preparing to raise the amount necessary on our own, even it means having to borrow money as we did for the first payment,” said Gutierrez.
“VP Leni won clearly, convincingly, and legitimately, and will avail of all legal remedies to defend the mandate she received from our people,” he added.
It can be recalled that Robredo was accused by her opponent of cheating and is now facing electoral protest. The vice president was ordered to pay pay P15 million for the 31,278 precincts she is contesting in her counter-protest. As of May 2nd, she has already settled P8 million.
She was supposedly due to pay the second installment of the 7.449 million fee on July 14th, but the team asked for extension. The PET granted this request. Meanwhile, Marcos already completed the payment for his P66.2-million protest fee.
